Insurance, Medishield Life & Integrated Shield Plans

For Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents, Medisave can be used for payment of most surgical procedures up to the respective Medisave Withdrawal Limits. Medishield Life alone does not cover private hospital bills. For that, you will need to have an Integrated Shield Plan. While the Integrated Shield Plans do not cover non-accident related dental treatment, they do cover most of the medically needed oral and maxillofacial surgeries including corrective jaw surgery and treatment of dental injuries due to accidents. As such, for treatment in private clinics and hospitals, it is advisable to have an Integrated Shield Plan, preferably with the necessary riders to minimize your cash outlay.

For example, if you have the highest Integrated Shield Plan with rider, a letter of guarantee can be obtained from your insurance company two weeks before the surgery. This way, the hospital can bill the insurance company directly. In some cases, when surgery is needed urgently, the letter of guarantee can be applied at the point of admission. However, last minute letters of guarantee usually set a limit beyond which you have to pay in cash first and then apply for reimbursement from your insurance company later.

Please note that if you do not already have an Integrated Shield Plan when you come for the consultation, the insurance may treat it as a pre-existing condition and not cover it. For more information on Integrated Shield Plans, please visit the Medishield website.
