If you’re in need of jaw surgery in Singapore, whether that consists of dental implant placement, extraction of impacted wisdom teeth, or orthognathic surgeryto correct disproportionate or poorly aligned jaws, the cost of the care you need is quite likely to be a concern. After all, most people do have budget limitations, making costs and important factor in planning necessary medical care. To aid you in planning the financial aspects of your care, we have assembled some facts and figures that can help you get a general idea of the costs associated with the jaw surgery you need.

Jaw surgery cost in Singapore can vary from one surgical practice to another and between private practices and public hospitals. To help patients assess those costs, the Ministry of Health, Singapore, assembles figures on the average costs of various medical procedures in Singapore, including jaw surgeries. Here is an overview of those average costs in 2013:

  • Dental Implant Placement – Average fees for dental implants, which includes the surgery and the implant, but in most cases, not the prosthesis, consultation, OT consumables and x-ray fees, ranged from $1,377 to $2,325 per implant in public institutions and from $800 to $5,000 per implant in private clinics.

  • Impacted Wisdom Tooth Surgery – In public facilities, the average cost of impacted wisdom tooth surgeries done under local anesthesia ranged from $574 to $800 per tooth, while average costs of the procedure in private clinics varied from $250 to $1,900. These figures do not include consultation, x-ray and investigation fees.

  • Corrective Jaw Surgery – The costs of corrective jaw surgery, also called orthognathic surgery, vary widely according to the type and complexity of procedures, with average costs ranging between $4,000 and $24,000 for surgeons’ fees and $15,000 to $20,000 for hospital charges.

Financing the surgery with Medisave and Integrated Shield Plans:

Medisave is a national mandatory medical savings account. The use of Medisave funds for surgery is subject to a withdrawal limit that is assigned to a specific procedure. For corrective jaw surgery, the range is between $5000 and $7000. For dental implant surgery, the limit is $950 per implant and removal of impacted wisdom teeth is subjected to a $950 limit per tooth.

For corrective jaw surgery, Integrated Shield Plans can be used. Depending on the specifics of your shield plan, you may be able to claim insurance for 60% to 100% of your bill. For dental implant surgery, only those done to replaced a tooth lost due to an accident can be claimed. Dental implants placed to replace teeth that were already missing or needing extraction due to decay or gum disease are not eligible for claiming under integrated shield plans.

It is important to note that while the cost of jaw surgery in Singapore is certainly important, it should not be the primary consideration. Quality of care and the qualifications of your care provider are just as important, since the results of your surgery will affect your health and appearance for many years to come. These factors can vary widely from one practice to another and between public and private facilities. In general, patients find that private clinics are the better option, with most offering a higher level of care than the typical public facility.

For instance, patients are frequently treated by residents in public hospitals, rather than fully qualified and experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Private practices also offer services that are not routinely provided by public hospitals, such as use of 3-D imaging for dental implant planning and placement and better forms of anesthesia for greater patient comfort. Additionally, patients who use private practices for their care typically receive more individualized treatment, surgeons spending more time on examinations and assessments, as well as offering patients more information and options during treatment planning.

Patients who choose Aesthetic Reconstructive Jaw Surgery for their care are treated by Dr. Chan, a leading Singapore Dental Surgeon specializing in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery. The bottom line is that quality, in terms of your provider and the materials and equipment he or she uses, is a much more important factor in jaw surgery than price.
